Laboratory Safety Guidelines: Fume Hood Exhaust & Face Velocity Standards
SG Tech
SG Tech Notice
Maintaining proper laboratory ventilation is vital for researcher safety and environmental compliance. Here are essential operational standards for laboratory fume hoods:
- Face Velocity Standards: Maintain an average face velocity of 0.4 m/s to 0.5 m/s (80 to 100 FPM) at working sash opening height (typically 400mm ~ 500mm).
- Exhaust System Compatibility: Choose PVC, PP, or SUS exhaust blowers matching the acidity and corrosive properties of the chemical vapors used.
- Bypass Airflow: Ensure upper bypass louvers and aerodynamic lower airfoils are free from obstruction to maintain laminar airflow without turbulence.
